Cracktros

Before the game loaded, there was the intro. Cracking groups left their mark in colour, music, and code - and in doing so, invented the demo scene.
A Calling Card That Outlived Its Purpose
Copy protection on C64 software was an obstacle to overcome. Once a cracking group stripped it out, they faced a choice: ship the game as-is, or announce themselves first. Almost universally they chose announcement - and in that choice the cracktro was born.
By 1984 the announcement had grown into competition. Who could produce more elaborate raster bar effects? Whose SID music was more memorable? Which group's PETSCII logo was more intricate? The games sold on the strength of their code; the cracktros sold on pride.
By 1987 the finest cracktros were technically equal to anything in commercial software. They had found an audience that cared about them specifically - not as packaging for a game but as short works of interactive art. That year the demo scene split off from the cracking scene entirely, carrying the tradition forward under a new name.
Full history of the scene"The scene was never really about piracy. Piracy was the context. The scene was about proving what you could do with the hardware."
