Playing the Games in 2026

Singleton's most important games are all playable today. The Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge are available free via a modern remake. Midwinter requires emulation but runs well on standard machines. Options below ranked from easiest to most hands-on.

The Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge - Free on GOG

The easiest way to play both Midnight games. Chris Wild's 2013-2014 remake is available free on GOG.com and includes both The Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge with modern quality-of-life improvements: widescreen support, save anywhere, and a modern UI while preserving the original gameplay intact.

  1. Visit GOG.com - The Lords of Midnight and click "Add to library" (free, requires a GOG account)
  2. Download and install via the GOG Galaxy client or the standalone installer
  3. The package includes both The Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge
  4. For context on the world and characters before starting, see the flagship editorial section

The GOG release uses Chris Wild's remake engine. For information on Wild's ongoing work with the Lords of Midnight property, see the Modern Scene section.

Lords of Midnight - iOS and Android

The Wild remake is also available on iOS and Android - the original platforms it launched on in 2013-2014. The touch interface was designed from the ground up for mobile play. This is particularly suitable for the original game's session structure, which lends itself to pick-up-and-put-down play.

  1. Search "Lords of Midnight" on the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android)
  2. The app includes both The Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge
  3. Pocket Gamer gave the iOS release 9/10; Mirror.co.uk gave it 5/5
EMULATION

ZX Spectrum Original - Authentic Experience

For the authentic 8-bit experience on the original ZX Spectrum hardware architecture, emulation is the most accessible route. The ZX Spectrum emulator Fuse is open-source, free, and available for all major platforms.

  1. Download Fuse ZX Spectrum emulator (Windows, macOS, Linux)
  2. Obtain a Lords of Midnight .tzx or .tap file from a verified archive - World of Spectrum at worldofspectrum.net is the canonical source
  3. Load the file in Fuse (File - Open) and allow the tape to load
  4. The game uses text commands to view surroundings, move lords, and manage armies - a brief manual is advisable for first-time players

The ZX Spectrum version is historically significant but the GOG release above is more immediately playable. The emulator route gives you Singleton's original vision, including the loading screen and authentic 48KB memory constraints.

EMULATION

Midwinter - Atari ST and Amiga via Emulation

Midwinter has not received a modern remake. The best way to play it is through Atari ST or Amiga emulation. Both are well-supported by current emulators and the game runs well on standard hardware.

  1. For Atari ST: download Hatari emulator (free, all platforms). Configure with 4MB RAM and a TOS ROM image (available from Atari community sites)
  2. For Amiga: download FS-UAE or WinUAE (Windows). The Amiga 500 configuration with 1MB RAM is appropriate for Midwinter
  3. Obtain a Midwinter disk image (.st for Atari ST, .adf for Amiga) from archive sites
  4. Midwinter requires patience on first play - consult a guide for the recruitment and mission mechanics

For video of what Midwinter looks and plays like before committing to emulator setup, see the Midwinter video section. The Atari ST footage shows the original platform; the Amiga footage shows the colour palette and rendering differences.

BROWSER

Lords of Midnight - Internet Archive Browser Emulation

The Internet Archive hosts ZX Spectrum emulation in the browser. This requires no software installation and works in any modern browser, though the experience is less polished than dedicated emulators.

  1. Visit archive.org - The Lords of Midnight (ZX Spectrum)
  2. Click the "Emulate" button to run in the browser
  3. The ZX Spectrum emulation loads the game automatically
  4. Browser emulation has variable performance depending on hardware and browser - the GOG version above is preferable for sustained play
