The TFMX Format

Thalion's music was composed using TFMX - The Final Musicsystem eXtended - a tracker format developed specifically for the Amiga. TFMX allowed composers to achieve high-quality, multi-channel audio using the Amiga's Paula chip with sophisticated effects, sample playback, and dynamic mixing not possible with simpler formats.

Jochen Hippel's mastery of TFMX - alongside his earlier work on the Atari ST's Yamaha YM2149 - placed him among the foremost game composers of the 16-bit era. His Thalion soundtracks use the format to produce music that remains remarkably rich and atmospheric today.

The complete TFMX archive for Thalion's catalogue is maintained at the Thalion Webshrine music archive and the broader ExoticA TFMX collection. These resources allow you to download original module files and play them with compatible players (including Winamp TFMX plugin, OpenMPT, and native Amiga emulators).

Note: Thalion's music uses TFMX/HIP formats - not SID. There is no HVSC coverage for Thalion titles. Do not expect SID player compatibility.

Soundtrack Catalogue

Wings of Death

1990 · Jochen Hippel · TFMX · Amiga / Atari ST

One of Hippel's most celebrated Thalion compositions. The main theme is an energetic, driving piece that perfectly accompanies the relentless vertical shmup action. Multiple in-game tracks maintain the energy across the game's stages. Widely regarded as one of the finest Amiga shmup soundtracks. See also: Wings of Death in flagship games.

Lionheart

1993 · Jochen Hippel · TFMX · Amiga

Hippel's Lionheart score is considered his finest Thalion work - and among the finest Amiga soundtracks ever produced. The title theme and level music perfectly complement Henk Nieborg's extraordinary visuals. The score uses TFMX to achieve orchestral depth that belies the hardware limitations. See also: Lionheart in flagship games.

Dragonflight

1990 · Jochen Hippel · TFMX · Amiga / Atari ST / DOS

An epic, atmospheric score for Thalion's first major RPG. The main theme establishes the fantasy world of Droon with real grandeur. In-game music adapts to the outdoor and dungeon environments, demonstrating Hippel's early command of mood and atmosphere. See also: Dragonflight in flagship games.

Ambermoon

1993 · Jochen Hippel · TFMX · Amiga / DOS

The Ambermoon soundtrack spans the game's vast world - outdoor themes for the world map, atmospheric dungeon music, and distinctive battle tracks. The score supports the RPG's epic scope, maintaining immersion across many hours of play. See also: Ambermoon in flagship games.

Amberstar

1992 · Jochen Hippel · TFMX · Amiga / DOS

The predecessor to Ambermoon's soundtrack. Already a sophisticated score for a sprawling RPG, with themes for the overworld, towns, and dungeons. The Amberstar music laid the foundation for Hippel's even more ambitious Ambermoon compositions.

No Second Prize

1992 · Matthias Steinwachs · Amiga

Music for No Second Prize differs from the Hippel norm - the racing simulation uses a driving, energetic score suited to its motorcycle racing setting. The audio complements Steinwachs's technical achievement in the 3-D engine.

Chambers of Shaolin

1989 · Jochen Hippel · HIP · Amiga / Atari ST

An early Hippel score showing his developing voice. The martial arts theme is conveyed with rhythmic, energetic music that established the game's training-hall atmosphere.
