Martin Galway arrived at Ocean Software in Manchester in 1985, joining a small team of coders and artists at the height of the Commodore 64's commercial dominance. Self-taught on the SID chip, he quickly mastered techniques that few composers of the era could match: sampled drums, multi-layered arpeggios, and an ear for melody that set his work apart from the more technically-focused approaches of contemporaries.
His catalogue spans some of the most recognisable music of the 8-bit era - from the pounding rhythms of Green Beret and the iconic Ocean Loader 2 to the shimmering complexity of Wizball, widely regarded as one of the greatest pieces ever composed for the SID chip. The Wizball suite - five distinct in-game themes reflecting a world being restored to colour - demonstrated a compositional ambition unique in C64 music.
Galway later joined Origin Systems and contributed music to Times of Lore, before moving on to work with Chris Roberts on the Wing Commander series. In later years he joined Cloud Imperium Games and contributed to Star Citizen, bridging the world of retro gaming with contemporary blockbuster production.
