How to play Team17 games
Evercade — The Easiest Option
The simplest legal way to play Team17 classics is the Evercade Team17 Amiga Collection 1 cartridge, released in 2023. The Evercade is a dedicated retro gaming handheld and console system that uses physical cartridges containing licensed, pre-configured game collections.
The Team17 Amiga Collection 1 cartridge includes Alien Breed, Project-X, Superfrog, Body Blows, and several other titles. Games are pre-configured with correct emulation settings — no setup required. The cartridge works in both the Evercade handheld (portable) and Evercade VS (TV-connected console). This is the recommended option for players who want a simple, legal, zero-configuration experience.
Dream17 — Licensed ADF/IPF Downloads
Dream17 (dream17.abime.net) is a fan archive that hosts licensed disk images for Team17 classics in ADF (Amiga Disk File) and IPF (Interchangeable Preservation Format) formats. These are legally provided disk images authorised for free personal use.
ADF files can be used with any Amiga emulator. IPF files require the Capsimage/Softpres plugin for most emulators but provide more accurate preservation including disk protection data. Dream17's collection covers the majority of the classic-era Team17 catalogue.
FS-UAE — Recommended Emulator
FS-UAE is the recommended starting point for Amiga emulation. It provides a graphical configuration interface on top of the WinUAE engine and handles most setup tasks automatically.
Quick setup for OCS/ECS Team17 games (Alien Breed, Project-X, Superfrog):
- Download and install FS-UAE from fs-uae.net.
- Obtain a Kickstart ROM for the Amiga 500 (Kickstart 1.3 or 2.0). These can be purchased legally from the Amiga Forever package.
- Download ADF disk images from Dream17.
- In FS-UAE, select “Amiga 500” as the model for OCS games.
- Add the ADF files as floppy disk images in slot DF0.
- For multi-disk games, add all disks in order (DF0–DF3).
- Click “Start”. The emulator boots the game as an original Amiga would.
For AGA games (Super Stardust, Body Blows Galactic, Alien Breed 3D), select “Amiga 1200” as the model and use a Kickstart 3.1 ROM.
WinUAE — Advanced Option
WinUAE (Windows only) is the most feature-complete Amiga emulator available, with more granular hardware configuration options than FS-UAE. Recommended for users who want to fine-tune emulation accuracy, use peripherals, or emulate specific Amiga hardware configurations.
For most players, FS-UAE is sufficient and considerably easier to configure. WinUAE is the underlying engine FS-UAE uses, so the emulation accuracy is equivalent at default settings.
WHDLoad — Hard Drive Installation
WHDLoad is a system that allows Amiga games to run from a hard drive (or emulated hard drive image) rather than floppy disks. WHDLoad “slaves” exist for most Team17 titles.
Benefits of WHDLoad: no disk swapping, faster loading, often includes bugfixes and compatibility improvements, and works well with FS-UAE and WinUAE hard drive images. The WHDLoad website lists available slaves and installation instructions for each title.
Basic WHDLoad setup in FS-UAE: create a hard drive image in FS-UAE, install WHDLoad and the game slave to it, then boot from an Amiga Workbench disk to run the installer. Detailed instructions are available at the English Amiga Board — see resources for the link.
Platform Notes for Specific Games
Worms (DOS version): The DOS version of Worms runs natively on Windows via DOSBox (available as part of DOSBox-X or the ScummVM fork). This is often simpler than the Amiga version for players new to emulation. Game data is widely available via legitimate sources.
Arcade Pool (DOS version): Also available in DOS format; runs in DOSBox. The Amiga version requires standard Amiga 500 emulation.
CD32 titles: To run Amiga CD32 versions, configure FS-UAE for the CD32 model with a CD32 Kickstart ROM. These produce the CD-quality audio and FMV sequences that the CD32 versions include over the floppy originals.
