Team17 modern era
Alien Breed Trilogy (2009–2010)
In 2009, Team17 revisited the franchise that began their commercial story. The Alien Breed trilogy — Alien Breed: Evolution, Alien Breed 2: Assault, and Alien Breed 3: Descent — were released episodically across Xbox Live Arcade and, later, PlayStation Network, PC (Steam), and iOS.
The modern trilogy retained the top-down perspective and corridor-shooter structure of the Amiga originals. Critics noted the graphical update was substantial but the design philosophy was broadly conservative. Reception was generally positive, with the iOS version of the original episode being particularly well received for touch controls adaptation.
The trilogy is significant as a preservation act: it demonstrated Team17's commitment to the Alien Breed identity across platform generations, and introduced the franchise to players who had never encountered an Amiga. Steam versions remain available.
The Worms Franchise
From the 1995 Amiga original, Worms has expanded into one of the longest-running franchises in British gaming. Key entries in the lineage:
- Worms (1995) — Original Amiga/DOS release, Andy Davidson concept
- Worms 2 (1997) — First Windows-native entry; expanded weapon roster
- Worms Armageddon (1999) — Widely considered the series' high point; still actively played competitively
- Worms World Party (2001) — Online multiplayer focus
- Worms 3D (2003) — First 3D entry; mixed reception
- Worms: Open Warfare series (2006–2009) — Return to 2D on DS/PSP
- Worms Reloaded (2010) — PC; refined 2D return
- Worms W.M.D (2016) — Craft mechanics added; Steam best-seller
- Worms Rumble (2020) — Real-time departure; cross-platform online
The series' critical peak is generally placed at Worms Armageddon (1999), which has maintained an active competitive community for over two decades. Custom maps, ranking systems, and dedicated servers keep it viable as a competitive game even in 2024. The competitive community document their play at established Discord servers and Worms-specific ranking sites.
Team17 as Indie Publisher
Under Debbie Bestwick as CEO, Team17 pivoted from game developer to indie publisher. The model mirrors what Team17 themselves received from the games ecosystem in the early 1990s: a partner that believes in the work, provides resources, and shares the commercial risk.
The publisher catalogue has grown to include hundreds of titles across PC and console. Notable published titles include Overcooked!, The Escapists, Hell Let Loose, Yooka-Laylee, and Blasphemous. Team17 went public on the AIM stock market in 2018.
The indie publisher model has not been without controversy: several developers have ended publishing agreements with Team17, and public departures have generated press coverage. The studio has also faced criticism over individual title decisions. These incidents are part of the record of any large independent publisher navigating a complex industry.
The Wakefield team that made Alien Breed in 1991 is not the Wakefield company that publishes a hundred indie titles in 2024. Both are Team17; neither invalidates the other. See the history page for the full arc from merger to present day.
Evercade Preservation
The Evercade Team17 Amiga Collection 1 cartridge (2023) represents the most accessible legal preservation of Team17's Amiga output. The cartridge includes Alien Breed, Project-X, Superfrog, Body Blows, and other titles, pre-configured for the Evercade hardware.
Evercade's cartridge format provides a physical, DRM-free, legally licensed way to play classic games. For Team17 specifically, this is significant: it confirms active rights management and a willingness to license the classic catalogue to modern hardware. The collection's existence makes it easier for new players to encounter these games legally and without emulator configuration overhead.
For players who want the Amiga-authentic experience rather than Evercade's pre-configured emulation, see the play guide for FS-UAE and Dream17 download information.
