Fatal Fury, The King of Fighters

Eisuke Ogura served as a key designer and director on the Fatal Fury franchise, working closely with Takashi Nishiyama on the series’ core mechanics and character design. He later directed entries in the King of Fighters series, which evolved from the Fatal Fury engine into SNK’s flagship annual franchise. Ogura helped define the Neo Geo’s fighting game identity through his emphasis on large, expressive character sprites and team-based structure.

Fatal Fury, Street Fighter (Capcom)

Takashi Nishiyama is one of the most important figures in fighting game history. At Capcom, he directed the original Street Fighter (1987) - the prototype for all one-on-one arcade fighting games. After moving to SNK, he created Fatal Fury (1991) for the Neo Geo, which introduced the two-plane mechanic and laid the groundwork for SNK’s fighting game dynasty.

King of Fighters series

Koichi Yamazaki directed multiple entries in the King of Fighters series, including the widely praised KOF ’98 and KOF ’99. Under his direction, the KOF series refined team-based fighting into one of the most technically deep competitive formats in arcade fighting game history. His work established KOF as SNK’s premier franchise, outlasting the Neo Geo hardware itself.

Composer

Art of Fighting 2, Samurai Shodown III & IV, KOF ’95

Toshikazu Tanaka composed music for some of the Neo Geo’s most celebrated titles, including Art of Fighting 2 (1994) and Samurai Shodown III (1995). Working with the Yamaha YM2610 sound chip, Tanaka developed a style that balanced FM synthesis with sampled percussion to create the distinctive Neo Geo sound - powerful, punchy, and characterful in a way that distinguished the platform from contemporaries using the SNES SPC700.

Composer

Metal Slug series, King of Fighters

Yasuaki Fujita contributed to the sound design and composition for the Metal Slug series and various KOF titles. The Metal Slug soundtrack is notable for its integration of military marching cadences, jazz-influenced arrangements, and driving action cues - all crafted to complement the game’s visual intensity and pacing without overwhelming the sample-rich sprite animation.
