How to Play

SWOS on GOG, WinUAE, FS-UAE — how to play Sensible Software's best titles on modern hardware.

Sensible World of Soccer 96/97 - GOG

Official / DRM-free

The 96/97 edition of Sensible World of Soccer is available as an official DRM-free digital download on GOG.com. This is the easiest and most legally straightforward way to play SWOS on a modern PC. The GOG version includes DOSBox pre-configured for immediate play. Highly recommended as the first port of call.

Cannon Fodder - itch.io

Check availability

Cannon Fodder has been made available via itch.io. Check the itch.io platform for current availability and pricing. Itch.io offers a DRM-free distribution model ideal for older titles.

Sensible Soccer 2006

Modern release

Sensible Soccer 2006 (developed by Kuju Entertainment for Codemasters) brought the Sensible formula to PlayStation 2 and PC. For the full story on this post-acquisition release and how it compares to the originals, see the Modern page.

Play via Emulation

For the authentic Amiga experience, emulation is the recommended route. WinUAE and FS-UAE are the two leading options.

WinUAE

Windows / Free

WinUAE is the definitive Amiga emulator for Windows. It accurately reproduces the Amiga hardware at a cycle-level, including the Paula audio chip responsible for Richard Joseph's MOD soundtracks. For SWOS and Cannon Fodder, WinUAE with an ADF (Amiga Disk File) image of the original disks is the authentic way to play.

FS-UAE

Windows / Mac / Linux / Free

FS-UAE is a cross-platform Amiga emulator based on WinUAE's emulation core. It offers an easier setup experience than WinUAE with gamepad support, save states, and a friendlier configuration interface. Ideal for players new to Amiga emulation. FS-UAE also supports networked multiplayer, enabling SWOS online play with the active fan community.

DOSBox

Windows / Mac / Linux / Free

For the DOS versions of Sensible Soccer, SWOS, and Cannon Fodder, DOSBox provides accurate emulation with easy setup. The GOG editions of SWOS come pre-configured with DOSBox, making this the lowest-friction option for DOS play.

Recommended Setup

First-Time Players

Start with SWOS 96/97 on GOG. The pre-configured DOSBox installation means you can be playing within minutes. The DOS version plays identically to the Amiga original in terms of gameplay, though the Amiga version has the authentic Richard Joseph MOD audio at full fidelity.

For the full Amiga experience, set up FS-UAE first — its guided configuration makes Amiga emulation more approachable than WinUAE. You will need a legal Kickstart ROM (available from Amiga Forever) and ADF images of the original disks.

Online SWOS Play

FS-UAE supports networked multiplayer, which is how the active SWOS online community plays. Connect with other players through the SWOS Discord — see the Community page for details. The community maintains organised league play using this setup.
