The five key creators whose talent, vision, and collaboration made Sensible Software extraordinary.

Key people

Jon Hare

Co-founder & Lead Designer

Jon Hare co-founded Sensible Software with Chris Yates in 1986. He served as lead designer and creative director across the studio's entire lifespan, shaping the design language of Sensible Soccer, SWOS, Cannon Fodder, and Mega Lo Mania. His instinct for responsiveness and economy of design — making every game feel immediately right from the first button press — is the defining characteristic of the Sensible Software output.

After the Codemasters acquisition in 1999, Hare went on to found Tower Studios. He has remained an active voice in the retro gaming community, giving interviews and participating in retrospective events well into the 2020s. His 2022 interview is embedded below. [1]

Chris Yates

Co-founder & Lead Programmer

Chris Yates co-founded Sensible Software alongside Jon Hare in 1986. As lead programmer, Yates was responsible for the tight, responsive engines that powered Sensible Soccer, SWOS, Cannon Fodder, and the studio's earlier C64 titles. The performance of those engines — the tiny sprites, the instant control response, the smooth sixty-frame gameplay — was entirely his achievement. [2]

Yates departed Sensible Software following the Codemasters acquisition in 1999 and has largely maintained a low public profile since.

Stoo Cambridge

Artist & Designer

Stoo Cambridge joined Sensible Software as artist and designer, bringing a distinctive visual sensibility to the studio's Amiga-era output. His pixel art and UI work shaped the look and feel of SWOS and other mid-1990s titles. Cambridge has given retrospective interviews in 2022 and 2024, and appeared alongside Jon Hare at the Revival 2019 retrospective panel and in the 2022 Developer Spotlight documentary. [3]

Richard Joseph

Composer (Amiga MOD)

Richard Joseph composed the Amiga MOD music for Cannon Fodder, Sensible World of Soccer, and Cannon Fodder 2. His soundtrack work for these titles — particularly the Cannon Fodder theme "War Has Never Been So Much Fun" — is among the most celebrated music in Amiga gaming history. [4]

Joseph's Amiga MOD compositions were technically outstanding and emotionally resonant, elevating each game they accompanied. He is also remembered for his work on Speedball 2 for the Bitmap Brothers. He passed away in 2007; his music remains a touchstone for everyone who played Amiga games in the early 1990s. See the Music page for the full soundtrack story.

Martin Galway

Composer (C64 SID)

Martin Galway composed the Commodore 64 SID music for Wizball (1987), creating one of the most celebrated chip tunes ever written. The Wizball SID contains 9 subtunes and has been in continuous circulation in the HVSC archive since its first release. [5]

Galway was one of the leading C64 composers of the 1980s, and Wizball represents his finest collaboration with Sensible Software. The SID path in HVSC is C64Music/MUSICIANS/G/Galway_Martin/Wizball.sid. Listen via the Music page.
