Mighty Pirate (in Training)
The Secret of Monkey Island follows Guybrush Threepwood, a young man who arrives on Mêlée Island determined to become a pirate. He must pass three trials set by the Pirate Leaders, pursue a romance with the island's Governor, Elaine Marley, and ultimately confront LeChuck — an undead pirate ghost who has kidnapped Elaine and sailed for Monkey Island.
The game is structured in three acts: the trials on Mêlée Island, exploration of Monkey Island, and the confrontation with LeChuck aboard his ghost ship. Each act is rich with comedy, clever puzzle design, and the kind of incidental character writing that elevates the game beyond its contemporaries.
Insult Swordfighting
The insult swordfighting mechanic is one of the most beloved and inventive puzzle designs in adventure game history. To learn swordfighting, Guybrush must challenge pirates across Mêlée Island — but success depends not on combat skill but on delivering the correct insult and comeback during a duel.
Insults and comebacks are paired: each insult has one correct response. Guybrush learns the insults and comebacks by overhearing them and collecting them gradually. A pirate who hears an unknown comeback cannot be defeated; conversely, a memorised comeback is always sufficient.
iMUSE & the Monkey Island Theme
Michael Land composed the SOMI score — first implemented on the Roland MT-32 and Amiga, then expanded for the AdLib and Sound Blaster soundcards. The iMUSE system debuted here in its first form, transitioning music based on player location.
The Monkey Island Theme — the main melody that opens the game — is arguably the single most recognisable piece of music in adventure gaming history. It has been rearranged in every subsequent game in the series, each time carrying the same core melody into a new era.
The 2009 Special Edition re-recorded the full score with live instruments and an expanded ensemble. Players could toggle between the original MIDI and the new orchestral version in real time — a unique feature for any game.
In-Jokes & Easter Eggs
- The SCUMM Bar pirates reference the Three-Headed Monkey — a running joke that Guybrush uses to distract characters throughout the series.
- The cannibals of Monkey Island are vegetarians who are embarrassed about their headhunting past.
- Guybrush can hold his breath for ten minutes — a key ability he mentions repeatedly and which pays off in a late puzzle.
- The game's design was partially inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland, which Ron Gilbert loved as a child.
- The voodoo root solution — where Guybrush mixes grog ingredients to dissolve a lock — remains one of the most praised "logical cartoon" puzzles in genre history.
