Australian Villainy

Guybrush and Elaine return from their honeymoon to find Elaine declared legally dead and her property being sold. The villain is Ozzie Mandrill, an Australian businessman who plans to replace pirate culture with a tourist-friendly theme park chain — "Planetmonkey." Mandrill possesses the "Ultimate Insult," a device that can control all pirates.

The game introduces Monkey Kombat — a parody of Mortal Kombat involving chimpanzees, combat stances, and rock-paper-scissors logic. The mechanic was intended as comedy; many players found it tedious rather than funny. It remains the most criticised puzzle design in the series.

LucasArts Under Pressure

Escape from Monkey Island was made during a difficult period at LucasArts. The studio was shifting towards Star Wars games; the GrimE 3D engine — adapted from Grim Fandango — was not ideally suited to the Monkey Island aesthetic, and the console port introduced additional control constraints.

Despite these pressures, the game has its defenders: the writing is sharper than its reputation suggests, the voice performances are excellent, and several puzzle sequences — particularly the Melee Island sequence where Guybrush recovers his pirate credentials — are inventive. Murray returns, and the game's satire of theme park culture reads as surprisingly prescient.
