GOG — DRM-Free Classics
GOG.com offers DRM-free versions of key MicroProse titles, pre-configured to run on modern Windows, macOS, and Linux. The easiest entry point for new players.
Civilization
The 1991 original, fully playable via DOSBox. GOG’s release is pre-configured for modern hardware. Start here if you’ve never played the classic that launched a franchise.
X-COM: UFO Defense
The 1994 original, pre-configured via DOSBox. Pair with OpenXcom (below) for bug fixes, widescreen support, and mod compatibility. One of the most rewarding strategy games ever made.
X-COM: Terror from the Deep
The 1995 underwater sequel. Notoriously difficult; bring patience. Pair with OpenXcom Extended for the best experience.
Railroad Tycoon
The 1990 original. GOG’s Deluxe edition includes the original and the Deluxe variant with enhanced graphics and additional scenario maps.
Note: This page focuses on the classic MicroProse era (1982–2002). Civilization: Beyond Earth and post-MicroProse era titles are outside scope. For modern Civilization and XCOM titles, see the Modern page.
DOSBox
DOSBox emulates the DOS environment of the 1980s and 1990s, enabling authentic playback of MicroProse titles including AdLib and Sound Blaster audio.
DOSBox Staging
DOSBox Staging is the recommended modern fork of DOSBox, with improved compatibility, better audio emulation (including CMS/Game Blaster and AdLib), and active development. Download from the DOSBox Staging GitHub repository.
Quick setup: Mount your MicroProse game directory as C:, set cycles=max or cycles=10000 for DOS-era timing, and configure SBTYPE=sb16 for Sound Blaster audio. GOG releases already include a configured DOSBox launcher.
Internet Archive — In-Browser Play
The Internet Archive’s DOSBox-JS implementation allows some MicroProse titles to be played directly in a web browser. Quality varies; the GOG versions are preferable for serious play, but the Archive is excellent for a quick look at period titles.
Play on Modern Hardware
Open-source re-implementations provide the best modern experience for X-COM and Colonization.
OpenXcom
OpenXcom is a faithful open-source re-implementation of X-COM: UFO Defense and X-COM: Terror from the Deep. It requires the original game data files (available from GOG), then adds: native resolution support, bug fixes, mod compatibility, and extended features.
Recommended: OpenXcom Extended (OXCE) for the fullest feature set including additional enemy AI options, extended modding API, and quality-of-life improvements.
FreeCol — Colonization
FreeCol is an open-source implementation of Sid Meier’s Colonization (1994), running on modern Java with improved graphics and interface. No original files required. Actively developed with new features that extend the 1994 design.
OpenTTD — Transport Tycoon
OpenTTD is the open-source re-implementation of Transport Tycoon Deluxe (1994), published by MicroProse. It is free to download and play without the original files (base graphics are included). Active community, regular updates, and a massive modding scene.
