  1. Go to archive.org - Manic Miner (Bug-Byte)
  2. Click "Emulate" or the play button on the item page.
  3. The game loads in the JSMESS emulator. Use arrow keys or configure keyboard controls.

The Internet Archive also hosts the Software Projects re-release version. Both are the authentic original ZX Spectrum builds.

FUSE Emulator

EMULATION

FUSE (Free Unix Spectrum Emulator) is the most accurate ZX Spectrum emulator available. Cross-platform, open source, and actively maintained.

  1. Download FUSE from fuse-emulator.sourceforge.net
  2. Download the Manic Miner .tzx or .tap file from World of Spectrum or Spectrum Computing.
  3. Open the file in FUSE. The game loads and runs as on real hardware.

FUSE supports save states, adjustable speed, and real hardware timing. Best choice for the authentic 48K Spectrum experience.

EMULATION

ZX Spectrum Emulators (Desktop)

Full-featured ZX Spectrum emulators give the most accurate experience, including correct audio output for the "In the Hall of the Mountain King" music.

  1. Download Fuse (Linux/Windows/macOS) or Spectaculator (Windows)
  2. Download the Manic Miner TAP or TZX file from World of Spectrum
  3. Open the emulator, select File - Open, and choose the downloaded file
  4. The game will load from virtual tape - allow 2-3 minutes or use fast-load mode

Download the Original Files

DOWNLOAD

The original ZX Spectrum .tzx and .tap files for Manic Miner are preserved at multiple archives.

  1. Visit Spectrum Computing and search for "Manic Miner."
  2. Download the .tzx file (preferred for accurate tape timing) or .tap file.
  3. Open in FUSE, Spectaculator, or ZXBareMetal as appropriate for your system.

Both the Bug-Byte and Software Projects versions are available. The Software Projects version removes the third game from the Bug-Byte contract arrangement and is the standalone Manic Miner most people played.

Jet Set Willy

Browser Emulator

BROWSER

The Internet Archive hosts the original ZX Spectrum Jet Set Willy with in-browser emulation.

  1. Go to archive.org - Jet Set Willy (Software Projects)
  2. Click "Emulate" to launch in JSMESS.
  3. Note: the original release contains The Attic Bug. For full completion, apply the POKE fix before playing.

The POKE fix for The Attic Bug: POKE 35899,0 applied before starting the game disables the memory corruption. Check Spectrum Computing or JSW Central for the full set of recommended POKEs for the 1984 release.

FUSE Emulator with POKE Fix

EMULATION

FUSE allows POKE commands to be applied to running programs, making it the recommended way to play the original Jet Set Willy correctly.

  1. Download FUSE and a Jet Set Willy .tzx file from Spectrum Computing.
  2. Load the game in FUSE but pause before the title screen clears.
  3. Apply the POKE fix via the debugger: POKE 35899,0
  4. Resume and play. The Attic room can now be visited safely.

Some Spectrum Computing downloads include a pre-patched version with the Attic Bug already fixed. Check the item description before downloading.

HTML5 Remake

BROWSER

Browser-native HTML5 remakes of Jet Set Willy exist and can be played without any emulator or download.

  1. Search for "Jet Set Willy HTML5 play online" for current active versions.
  2. HTML5 remakes are typically based on the corrected version without The Attic Bug.

The fan community at JSW Central maintains links to playable versions including fan-made room sets that extend the original game's content.

Mobile and Modern Ports

LEGAL

Both Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy have official and unofficial mobile ports for iOS and Android.

  1. Search the App Store or Google Play for "Manic Miner" or "Jet Set Willy."
  2. Several ports exist with varying degrees of authenticity. Check reviews for accuracy to the original gameplay.

Mobile ports vary in quality. For authentic gameplay, the FUSE emulator or Internet Archive browser version is more reliable. Mobile versions may include cosmetic changes not present in the original.

Notes on the Original Files

The ZX Spectrum .tzx and .tap files for both Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy are widely available through preservation archives. They are the original game code, not remakes. Playing them through an accurate emulator like FUSE gives the closest possible experience to what players had in 1983-84, including the original loading screens, the Spectrum's colour attribute rendering, and the single-channel beep music.

The Attic Bug in Jet Set Willy is present in all unpatched original copies. If you download a .tzx from an archive, check whether it is the original bugged version or a pre-patched version before playing. Both are historically significant, but if your goal is to complete the game, use the patched version.
