Return to Monkey Island
The long-awaited sequel from Ron Gilbert himself, co-created with Dave Grossman and published by Devolver Digital. Return to Monkey Island (2022) finally gave Gilbert the opportunity to tell the conclusion to the story he started in 1990.
The game features a distinctive new art style by Rex Crowle, the voice cast from the earlier LucasArts games, and a story set after Escape from Monkey Island. It received critical acclaim and sold strongly, vindicating the decision to return to the series after a 22-year absence.
Thimbleweed Park
Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick's love letter to Maniac Mansion and the early LucasArts adventure era. Thimbleweed Park recreates the pixel art aesthetic, the verb interface, and the comedic sensibility of the late 1980s SCUMM games.
The game was funded through Kickstarter and features multiple playable characters, an elaborate mystery set in a 1987 small town, and numerous nods to the LucasArts golden age. It demonstrated that the classic adventure format could still find a substantial audience.
Grim Fandango Remastered
The first of three Double Fine remasters, supervised by Tim Schafer. Grim Fandango Remastered featured improved character lighting, a fully remastered orchestral soundtrack, developer commentary, and the ability to toggle between original and remastered graphics.
Released on PC, PlayStation 4, PS Vita, iOS, and Android, the remaster introduced Grim Fandango to a new generation and sparked renewed critical interest in the LucasArts adventure catalogue.
Day of the Tentacle Remastered
The second Double Fine remaster features entirely redrawn high-definition artwork while keeping every puzzle, line of dialogue, and the complete embedded Maniac Mansion game intact. Developer commentary from Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, and other original team members is accessible via a dedicated commentary mode.
The remaster toggle -- switching between 1993 pixels and 2016 HD with a single button press -- remains one of the best preservation design decisions in gaming.
Full Throttle Remastered
The final Double Fine remaster completed the trilogy. Full Throttle Remastered features redrawn HD artwork, remastered audio (including the Gone Jackals tracks), developer commentary from Tim Schafer and the original team, and the familiar toggle between original and remastered visuals.
Available on PC, PlayStation 4, and PS Vita.
