Modern Scene
Fan remakes, Freescape reimplementations, and new worlds built with the 3D Construction Kit. The Freescape engine has outlived the home computers it was designed for. Each project card shows current development status and links to download or contribute.
Freescape Engine Reimplementations
An open-source reimplementation of the Freescape engine within ScummVM, supporting all commercial Freescape titles: Driller, Dark Side, Total Eclipse, Castle Master, Castle Master II, and both versions of the 3D Construction Kit. This is the recommended way to play the original games on modern hardware. The engine achieves high compatibility with the original across multiple platform variants.
A reimplementation of the Freescape engine in Go, targeting WebAssembly deployment so Freescape games can run in a browser without plugins. The project aims to support all commercial Freescape titles and user-created 3D Construction Kit worlds. Currently supporting Driller and Dark Side.
Browser-based Freescape player derived from DOSBox-X's WebAssembly build. Allows playing the DOS versions of Driller, Dark Side, and Castle Master directly in a modern web browser. No download required. Maintained by the Freescape community.
Driller Remakes
A faithful remake of Driller using modern 3D rendering. The world geometry and puzzle design are preserved from the original, but rendered in smooth 3D with proper perspective and texture mapping. The original game's world map - all 18 sectors - is fully playable. Released as freeware.
A Godot Engine reimplementation of Driller's world geometry, using the original game data files for accuracy. The project is exploring how much of the original feel can be preserved in a modern engine while making the game accessible to new players unfamiliar with the original's interface.
Castle Master Remakes
High-definition remake of Castle Master with modernised controls and rendering while preserving the original castle layout, puzzle design, and ghost encounters. All 127 rooms are present. Playable in first-person and with an optional overhead map display that the original game lacked.
An experimental VR adaptation of Castle Master, exploring how Freescape's first-person 3D navigation translates to head-mounted display hardware. Development was halted after early prototypes, but the prototype build is available for download. The concept demonstrated that the original camera design was already well-suited to VR.
3D Construction Kit Projects
The central repository for 3D Construction Kit worlds created by the community. Currently hosts over 200 user-made Freescape worlds, with new submissions accepted. Worlds are tagged by genre, complexity, and the platform version of the Kit used to create them. An active community forum discusses techniques and shares work.
A modern editor for creating Freescape-compatible worlds, targeting the ScummVM Freescape engine as its runtime. The editor provides a modern GUI for world-building while producing output compatible with the original 3D Construction Kit format. Removes the original Kit's more arcane interface quirks while preserving full compatibility.
An original game built using the 3D Construction Kit II, set in a world inspired by Driller's moon setting. A complete standalone experience with original puzzle design, not a Driller recreation. Demonstrates what the Kit can produce in the hands of a skilled designer working in 2023.
