How to experience Cinemaware's games today - from Amiga emulation to legal digital downloads.

Emulator Guide

Playing Cinemaware titles at original quality requires proper Amiga emulation - the Amiga's custom chips and HAM display mode must be accurately emulated.

FS-UAE

Recommended

FS-UAE (Full Speed UAE) is the recommended Amiga emulator for Cinemaware titles. Based on WinUAE's emulation core, FS-UAE provides accurate emulation of the Amiga 500 and Amiga 1200 hardware required to run Cinemaware games. Key requirements:

  • Kickstart ROM files (Amiga 1.3 for most Cinemaware titles)
  • Amiga 500 configuration with 512KB chip RAM + 512KB slow RAM
  • HAM display mode support (enabled by default in accurate configurations)
  • ADF disk image files for the games

Amiga Forever

Legal & Easy

Amiga Forever (Cloanto) is a commercial Amiga emulation package that bundles FS-UAE or WinUAE with licensed Kickstart ROMs and Workbench - no separate ROM acquisition required. The Plus and Premium editions include a pre-configured emulator and access to the Amiga Forever software library. Recommended for users who want a legal, hassle-free setup.

WinUAE

Advanced

WinUAE is the reference Amiga emulator for Windows, with the most comprehensive hardware emulation and configuration options. Recommended for users who want maximum accuracy and configuration control. Requires separate Kickstart ROM acquisition. The Defender of the Crown HAM mode is accurately emulated in all recent WinUAE builds.

Play in the Browser

Internet Archive - Playable Versions

Free

The Internet Archive runs browser-based Amiga emulation (EM-DOSBOX and JSMESS) for some Cinemaware titles. Defender of the Crown, Rocket Ranger, and other titles may be playable directly in the browser from Archive.org. Quality varies - the HAM display mode required for Defender's artwork may not render accurately in all browser emulation environments. Check the Archive pages for playable options.

GOG - Cinemaware Anthology

DRM-Free

GOG.com has periodically offered a Cinemaware Anthology collection including Defender of the Crown, Rocket Ranger, It Came from the Desert, and other titles with pre-configured DOSBox or Amiga emulation. DRM-free. Check GOG for current availability - the catalogue may vary by region and period.

Steam - Wings: Remastered Edition

Modern Remaster

Wings: Remastered Edition is available on Steam - a modernised version of the 1990 Amiga original with updated graphics and controls. The remaster was released around 2014 and represents one of the few Cinemaware titles available in a modern commercial edition. See the Modern page for full details.

Getting the Best Experience

Defender of the Crown - HAM Display

To see Jim Sachs's artwork as intended, you must use an emulator with accurate HAM (Hold-And-Modify) display support, configured for an Amiga 500 or Amiga 1200. HAM mode allows 4096 colours simultaneously - without accurate HAM emulation, the artwork will appear with visible colour banding or incorrect hues. FS-UAE and WinUAE both emulate HAM mode correctly with default accurate-mode configurations.

Kickstart ROMs

Cinemaware's Amiga titles require Kickstart 1.3 ROM for the Amiga 500 configuration. Kickstart ROMs are copyrighted by Cloanto/Amiga Inc - they can be obtained legally through Amiga Forever or sourced from your own original hardware. Using ROMs from other sources may violate copyright.
