Legal ways to play the Bullfrog catalogue - GOG releases, DOSBox setups, and open-source enhancements.

GOG.com Releases

Three Bullfrog titles are available DRM-free on GOG.com. These are the recommended legal purchase options.

Dungeon Keeper Gold

GOG.com - DRM-Free

The enhanced edition of Dungeon Keeper including The Deeper Dungeons expansion. Runs via DOSBox on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The GOG version works out of the box and is compatible with KeeperFX for further enhancements. Considered the definitive version of the original game.

Theme Hospital

GOG.com - DRM-Free

The full Theme Hospital, running via DOSBox. Works on modern Windows, macOS, and Linux. Compatible with OpenMicrotheme (see below). The GOG release includes all original content and is the easiest legal route to playing the game today. Community guides for OpenMicrotheme integration are available on the GOG forum.

Syndicate Plus

GOG.com - DRM-Free

Syndicate Plus includes the original Syndicate and the American Revolt expansion. DOSBox-based, runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The GOG community forum includes setup guides for modern display resolutions and control configurations.

DOSBox Setup Guides

For titles not on GOG, or for running original disc versions, DOSBox is the recommended emulator.

DOSBox-X - Recommended Emulator

Free & Open Source

DOSBox-X is a more feature-complete fork of DOSBox, with better hardware emulation for DOS-era sound cards (AdLib, Sound Blaster) and improved configuration options. Recommended for Bullfrog DOS titles that you own on original media. Configure the OPL FM synth setting for the best reproduction of Russell Shaw's soundtracks.

Populous (DOS) - DOSBox Setup

DOSBox Required

Populous runs well in DOSBox. Recommended settings: cycles=3000, OPL emulation enabled (adlib or sb16), EMS memory on. The game uses a 320×200 VGA mode; DOSBox's aspect correction is recommended. Populous is available via the Internet Archive for preservation purposes.

Syndicate (DOS) - DOSBox Setup

DOSBox - or use GOG version

For the DOS version from original media: DOSBox-X with Sound Blaster emulation for OPL FM audio. Cycles around 8000 recommended. The GOG Syndicate Plus version (above) is pre-configured and the simpler option for most players.

Magic Carpet (DOS) - DOSBox Setup

DOSBox Required

Magic Carpet requires a faster CPU cycle setting - try 25000–30000 in DOSBox. The game uses VESA modes in places; DOSBox-X's VESA support handles this better than standard DOSBox. OPL FM audio recommended for Shaw's original compositions.

Modern Enhancements

OpenMicrotheme - Theme Hospital Enhancement

Free & Open Source

OpenMicrotheme is an open-source enhancement project for Theme Hospital. It adds widescreen support, higher resolutions, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements to the original game. Requires the original game data files (available via GOG). The project is actively maintained and widely regarded as the best way to play Theme Hospital on modern hardware.

KeeperFX - Dungeon Keeper Enhancement

Free & Open Source

KeeperFX is a free open-source enhancement for Dungeon Keeper. It adds widescreen and high-resolution support, bug fixes, new campaigns, creature pathfinding improvements, and multiplayer. Compatible with Dungeon Keeper Gold from GOG. The most comprehensive way to play DK1 today.

OpenDK - Engine Reimplementation

Open Source - In Development

OpenDK is an open-source reimplementation of the Dungeon Keeper engine from scratch. The project aims for full feature parity with the original game and native support for modern platforms, enabling future modding beyond what the original executable allowed. See the Community page for more.

The Bullfrog catalogue is held by Electronic Arts, who acquired the studio in 1995. EA currently sells Dungeon Keeper Gold, Theme Hospital, and Syndicate Plus on GOG.com; these are the recommended legal purchase options.

Titles not currently available on digital storefronts - including Populous, Theme Park, Magic Carpet, and others - may be playable via original physical media and DOSBox. The Internet Archive hosts preservation copies under its software preservation mission; access policies should be reviewed at archive.org.
